Formation 02 – an artistic and revolutionary product in the world of bathroom design. Created by designer Samuel Ross, this toilet is not just an ordinary sanitary fixture but a functional work of art, blending creativity with practicality. It offers a unique and modern experience for the bathroom space.

Formation 02, designed by Samuel Ross for the furniture brand Kohler, is a bold statement piece in bathroom design

Designer Samuel Ross deliberately defies all conventional expectations of what a traditional toilet should look like — and in doing so, he created Kohler’s very first toilet design, set to debut at Milan Design Week 2024. The Formation 02 smart toilet features a striking asymmetrical form in bold orange, evoking the sharp lines and raw edges of brutalist architecture.

Planned as a limited-edition release, Formation 02 is the result of an ambitious effort to elevate the humble toilet into the realm of functional sculpture.

The toilet features a sharp-edged, asymmetrical form

One of the standout features of Formation 02 is its outer shell made from composite resin, evoking a natural aesthetic with rugged textures and cut lines reminiscent of raw stone. The asymmetrical design and sharp architectural detailing give this bathroom fixture a striking and captivating appearance.

Featuring convenient functions such as a heated seat, customizable cleaning system, night light, hands-free open/close, automatic flushing, and remote control via touchscreen, Formation 02 embodies innovation and comfort. This is not just an ordinary toilet—it’s a functional work of art, blending aesthetics with modern design.

Designer Samuel Ross shared: “Formation 02 has a unique appeal, drawing attention through bold colors and asymmetry. While it undeniably carries a strong artistic presence, it never loses sight of its essential function. This also opens up a new price point for such a product, which will retail for around $25,000 per unit.”

The outer plastic shell allows for more creative freedom in the design

After launching the angular Formation 01 shower at Design Miami last year, Formation 02 is now the latest product representing the collaboration between bathroom brand Kohler and industrial design studio SR_A, led by designer Samuel Ross.

As designer Samuel Ross approached the project, he treated it more as an artistic endeavor than a traditional design task. Rather than starting with CAD files or technical specifications, Ross began with pen and paper—sketching shapes and ideas freely. This intuitive and emotional process allowed him to craft unique forms that weren’t limited by digital tools or technological constraints.

He shared, “I wanted to create shapes that had never been seen before. So I chose to begin from a very pure perspective—pen and paper—letting my intuition and emotions guide the design process.”

Ross’s Formation 02 marks a new step in reimagining the bathroom space, blending artistry with functionality. By integrating organic design elements and cutting-edge technology, this toilet transcends its conventional role to become a functional piece of art, delivering a truly unique user experience.
